Even midnight fears
its own demise
so the full moon tries
to swallow the ocean with some humility
it is only an orb
after all…
there are two sides to every story
and in the secret silence of morning
light fades into light
and sun doubles back as heat
to bounce off sugary sand and burn
a powerful exclamation of triumph
over its cool white twin.
Wake up while you can
feel the cool hardwood beneath your feet
and what it means to leave warm security behind
Inhale the scent of soap, toothpaste, coffee
listen to the bang and clatter of a day beginning
see into the future if you must be convinced
Everyday in your life is a special occasion
3
We are drawn to like
and conditioned to fear
Either is a risk
4
Fortunes come in cookies
fortunes are made in dreams
The fortunate know which ones to believe in
The fortunate understand fortune smiles
on no one
5
Stop trying to fix me
to fill my days with activity
as if it would make my brain
retrain itself to be well-behaved
well-intentioned, I’m sure
are your motives
I’m certain your heart is pure
but I cannot be who you need me to be
I cannot see how to wrestle free
from your expectations of me
6
There is nothing I can tell you
that you don’t already know
or claim to have figured out
it must be a burden to be so brilliant
before you’ve even learned to drive
7
It’s too late
you say
It’s too heavy
but the cross cannot be laid down
and you would rather live with the demons
than silence them
You would rather carry the world
than let it collapse around you
so go ahead into the prison of your own making
shut the door and throw far away the key
huddle in the corner and wrestle the addiction
as it pushes you down too far to be seen
When you’re ready for the light
cry out to it
from the gutter depth of gut-worn silence
it will come, though not easily
let it spill over each tired neglected bone
lending strength to what is spent
8
It seems as though the stars
have lost their way
and do not know any longer
to point back down to the earth
How I long for their luster,
wrapped in a velvety black blanket
covering every inch of a big Texas sky
While I gaze up from the flat rolling hills
and drive toward the dawn
9
The way you stare
into the lens
lets me know
you have something to say
I will wait for it, patiently
until you are ready to speak
10
Who am I to say what words are best?
